Our History

The Learning Center was established to address pressing needs in East Harlem — providing a safe, nurturing environment where children could learn and grow outside of school hours. Over the years, the organization expanded its offerings to include STEM education, summer camps, and youth leadership experiences.

Milestones included the move into a dedicated facility at 325 East 101st Street, marked by a Grand Opening celebration, and the organization's 25th Anniversary, which honored decades of service to the community.

Our Founder

The Booker T. Washington Learning Center was founded by Rev. Leroy Ricksy, whose vision of a community anchor dedicated to education and family support shaped the organization from its earliest days. His legacy continues to inspire the Center's work in East Harlem.

Community Challenges

East Harlem families face significant obstacles — from limited access to quality after-school programming to economic pressures that strain household stability. The Learning Center was built to meet these challenges head-on by providing free and low-cost educational programs, a supportive community network, and resources that help families thrive.

Through partnerships, volunteer efforts, and donor support, the Center works to close opportunity gaps and create pathways for children to succeed academically and personally.

Staff

The Learning Center's team includes dedicated educators, program coordinators, and administrative professionals committed to the mission of serving East Harlem's children and families. Staff members bring expertise in youth development, STEM instruction, and community outreach.

Volunteers

Volunteers play an essential role at the Learning Center — assisting with after-school tutoring, supporting special events, and contributing their time and skills to strengthen programs. Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to reach out.
